The Rings — What Jump Gates Are, How They Work, and Why the Corridor Uses Them

This primer is issued under Concord open-distribution charter for first-time spacers, treaty students, diaspora arrivals, and anyone whose education skipped stellar logistics in favor of local history. It is accurate. It is also corporate. We built the rings. We maintain the rings. We believe the rings are the correct answer to the question "how does a civilization cross parsecs without losing its lunch, its crew, or its century."
Spacers call them the rings. Registries call them the jump-gate network. Your receipt calls them a line item. All three names refer to the same infrastructure: Concord-owned coupling frames that translate a gate-rated hull from one registered anchor point to another in minutes instead of decades.
What a jump gate is (plain language)
A jump gate is not a wormhole you walk through. It is a coupled transit system.
Think of it as a harbor lock for spacetime. Your ship does not fly across the void between stars under its own drive for that leg. Your ship docks to a Concord coupling frame, satisfies clearance, enters a controlled translation window, and emerges at another frame that shares the same network calibration.
The rings are fixed installations — massive, maintained, insured, and billed. Concord sets the schedules, the safety envelopes, and the tariffs. Treaty ports host the frames. Independent hulls use them because the alternative is still legal and almost never practical.
How a standard jump works (the sequence we expect you to memorize)
Every commercial jump follows the same choreography. Variations exist by port class, hull rating, and whether your awakened specialist triggers astral hygiene review. The skeleton is constant.
1. Approach and queue Your navigator receives a slot from port traffic control. You join the coupling queue at a published distance. Priority clearance exists for medical, treaty, and fee-paid expedite lanes. The queue is not punishment. It is mass management. A hub moves thousands of hulls per day.
2. Coupling Your hull extends gate coupling hardware — rated clamps, fuel umbilicals, data handshake — into the frame receiver. The frame verifies registry identity, Concord Hull Class, and hydrogen-ton displacement band. Mismatch aborts coupling. Fraud aborts coupling. "We will fix it after we jump" aborts coupling.
3. Clearance Manifest, crew bio scan, cargo declaration, and astral hygiene pass where applicable. Fuel dock coupling charges post here. Insurance bands update here. This is where your credstick learns the jump is real.
4. Transit window Translation itself is brief — often described as thirty seconds of subjective time, though instrument logs disagree in ways physicists find rude. Crew should be secured. Gardens should be on stabilization. Awakened personnel should not be mid-working. You are not piloting through a tunnel. You are being handled.
5. Emergence and release You decouple at the destination frame, receive local traffic insertion, and resume in-system thrust under normal flight rules. You are now elsewhere. Your produce shipment is still fresh. Your bounty mark is still the same age. Your employer is still impatient. That is the product.
You are not at the job yet (read this twice)
Jump gates are built on the outer traffic shell of each mapped system — far from cities, domes, and station districts. Concord queues mass traffic at the perimeter so coupling radiation, inspection holds, and ten-thousand-hull days do not thread civilian approach lanes.
Translation gets you to the system. Fusion thrust, traffic slots, parking assignment, and shuttle queues get you to the mark. In a hub system that inward leg is often days. In Sol, legal approach to Earth can run weeks to months. Pirates work that leg because response time is measured in arguments, not miracles.
Where gate-rated hulls park (and where they do not)
If your hull is CHC-balanced and crosses the rings for a living, your default home port is a parking orbit — Long, Medium, or Short band — assigned by traffic control. You pay daily orbit fees. You queue a shuttle or cargo tender when crew need noodles, yards, or a fixer. Your ship stays outside the station skin. That is normal. That is how freight, bounty sleds, and mid transports survive the meter.
Station and planetary dock berths — slips inside the port, tied to a pier, breathing the same air as the customs hall — still exist. They are priced and slotted for a different clientele: treaty diplomats, corporate flagships, wealth estates that treat a hull like furniture, and the small inner-system shuttles and skiffs that never couple to the rings because they were never built to leave the system. A Class II independent with a greenhouse blister does not "dock downtown" on a working budget. You orbit. You ride the tender. You complain about the fare like everyone else.

Why your hull must be gate-rated (CHC)
Not every ship humanity ever built is built for the rings.
Concord Hull Class — CHC — describes gate-balanced architecture
crew block, cargo, radiators, and cryo hydrogen bunkers in proportions the network expects. Registry inspectors measure hydrogen-ton displacement, coupling hardware, life-support person-days, and related indices. CHC applies to gate-era commerce in 2277. It is how we keep translations predictable.
Legacy families — Colony Drives launched 2101–2111, Long-Range Lane Scouts now extinct, independent pre-ring independents — used different ratios. Many could cross stars without coupling. Why the rings are better than the old methods (an honest comparison)
Concord is not asking you to forget history. We are asking you to compare outcomes.
Colony Drives and Exodus arks The megahulls of the early twenty-second century carried millions in cryo on sublight vectors — 0.05 to 0.12c, forty to two hundred years star-to-star. Billions embarked. Many arks are still inbound. Their destinations matured while they slept. That is not failure. That is schedule mismatch on a civilizational scale. Gates do not replace their courage. Gates prevent their grandchildren from needing the same gamble for a freight contract.
Lane Scouts Scoop-equipped corridor mappers — small crew wedges on megadrives — charted routes one lane at a time. Ingenious. Slow. Extinct as a class after the rings lit. The arm outgrew one-route-at-a-time logistics.
Legacy independents Pre-ring hulls with onboard fuel cracking could star-hop on their own vector, their own calendar, their own risk. A few still exist. Concord maintains acquisition and scrappage programs for obsolete drive hazards. Working crews rarely choose independence from the network when tariffs, insurance, and time-to-paycheck all favor coupling.
Gate-to-gate commerce today Minutes between major hubs when queues cooperate. Crew awake. Perishable cargo viable. Bounty windows measurable in days instead of senescence. Treaty enforcement possible because ports know who arrived when. Economies of scale across species, guilds, and corporations that share the same calendar.
Sublight between stars remains legal. Romantic, even. Economically identical to suicide for a three-person freelance crew unless you inherited a generation ship or a patron who measures patience in centuries.
