Iron Choir’s seal press is a hand-cranked cast-iron relic with a flywheel that sings through worn bearings. The dies are stacked in a wooden box: customs stars, agricultural marks, pressure-test stamps, and several symbols no current clerk recognizes. Heat comes from a spirit burner under the foil tray. Turn steadily and the impression lands deep and convincing. Rush, and the seal doubles like bad vision. The machine weighs nearly as much as a child and is harder to move quietly. Its great advantage is age—tool marks resemble equipment still used in remote depots. Its disadvantage is also age. The main shaft sheds black grease onto everything, including finished work.
