Iron Choir Kestrel is a mostly mechanical latch for ships that distrust software or simply can’t afford much of it. A laminated steel hook catches a toothed strike bar; a small electric governor releases it when the correct punched key strip passes through the reader. The hook, spring, and bronze wear shoe are exposed behind a bolted service plate, each marked with grease-pencil inspection boxes. Installation needs a square jamb, four through-bolts, and enough clearance to swing the manual lever. Every accepted or rejected strip advances separate numbered counters. A waxed paper roll records service openings, but there’s no timestamp unless the ship’s clerk writes one. The governor runs three years on a squat battery, and the mechanical master key ignores power entirely. Oil thickened by cold causes false rejects; worn counterfeit strips cause more. Because key strips bear ship and berth numbers, losing one generally means a formal watch report—and several weeks of jokes about high technology.
