The thermal liner is a close-fitting quilt of phase-change fiber worn beneath pressure gear. It drinks body heat during hard work, then gives it back when the wearer stops moving or crosses into shadow. Silver threads at cuffs and spine spread hot spots before they become burns. The garment feels cool and slightly damp even when dry, which takes getting used to. It must be washed without ordinary detergent; soap clogs the fibers and leaves the liner smelling clean while performing like a blanket. Crews mark contaminated wash bins with skulls. Laundry staff add stronger language. A good liner does not make cold harmless. It stretches the time before cold becomes the only thought left.
