Flag detail at the middle school

The principal called on a Tuesday. The old flag rope had frayed, and they wanted the post there when the new one went up.

We rolled early. The kids lined the walk. Nobody made a speech that needed a microphone. The detail did the work, folded the worn flag, and handed it to the shop teacher who had asked for it for the classroom wall.

Coffee afterward in the teachers’ lounge. That is the job on a good day.
