Proxima Libre

Overview

Proxima Libre

Proxima Libre is what happens when a charter decides culture is infrastructure. The habitable world orbits Proxima Centauri — red sun, long twilight, lavender hills — but the continent the maps label La France Libre (*Free France*) reads like a deliberate answer to exile: French law, French schools, French newspapers, French arguments about whether the coffee is already perfect.

Terraformers did not merely make air. They sculpted rain shadows, limestone belts, frost ladders, and slope grades until the export boards could honestly claim the finest wine in thousands of light-years. Champagne comes from engineered karst and disciplined bubbles; Grand Cru reds from terraces that look like geometry homework done by someone who loves grapes more than people.

Cities — Nouveau Lyon, Port Marseillaise, Champagne Haut — are elegant, proud, and bored in the particular way of places that know they are expensive. Outsiders who arrive speaking only spacer English get understood. They do not get forgiven quickly.

The Domaine Fenmar estates in the Haut Vallee are not the only vineyards — but they are the ones Solaris ledgers name first when someone wants to prove they are still rich enough to matter. Madame Aldith Fenmarretired governor, charter patron, and the woman who built the label after she left Earth's oldest wine houses behind — still sets the tone in Nouveau Lyon when she attends, which is rarely and expensively.
