Vondra Deep-Cut has been proven wrong for thirty years and turned out right last season, and she has no idea yet that being right is the most dangerous thing that's ever happened to her.

Blue house tattoos on both forearms, half-scarred by acid burns from an atmosphere that eats cheap gear and cheaper people. She talks like a drill — blunt, on beat, no wasted stroke — and she pours you real coffee out here at the edge of nowhere because a crew that flew her supplies in through that murk earned it.

The seam is real. She'll show you if she trusts you — down-cable into the dark, her Frame's lamps on a face of ore that means her crew eats, her debts clear, her stubbornness finally pays. She's already planning the second shaft. What she hasn't let herself believe is that up the gate lane a System King's assay office has noticed the same assays she has, and that a pleasant man on Khesret has arranged for the paperwork to arrive right about when your supplies do. When she finds out — and she will — she won't rage. She'll go quiet and old and hard, and she'll ask the only question that matters: is anybody here fast enough, and straight enough, to carry the proof of what she dug to a registrar who can't be bought before the writ closes the door.
