Ril Quiet-Mark

Ril Quiet-Mark is relocating, and she has practiced the cheerful version of that sentence until it almost sounds true.

She's Goblishili — under four feet, rose-peach skin with a soft shimmer, white-blonde hair braided through with the single copper ear-ring of a junior Incentive House clerk who hasn't earned a full house braid yet. Oversized ears that catch every tonal slip on the berth. She's twenty-nine, which for her people is early career, and she talks like a ledger: precise, polite, a little too fast when she's nervous. The posting to Tally Verge is supposed to be a step up — clearing-edge experience, better rates, a chance to grow her rings. She packed light. She thanked the factor twice. She has not, as far as anyone can tell, read the arrival clause in the vowel register it was written in.

She's good company in a small-ship way: makes broth, asks about your hull, never once asks you to explain why tall people need so much headroom. What she doesn't know is that the bond that prepaid her passage contains a pitch-shifted transfer — on arrival at Tally Verge, her remaining indenture years flip to a different Incentive House. She's being sold sideways. She thinks she's being promoted. The difference is one vowel she never heard, and she's about to hear it from a bond-reeve with a warm smile.
