Dawn-Bough Grove Basin
Overview
Dawn-Bough Grove Basin
You drop through grey soup that reads dense and cold and lifeless on every gauge, and then the basin opens under you like a held breath: a deep tidewater cut where the heavy air pools warm and wet, mist rolling off shallow estuaries, and green. Real green, canopy-green, the impossible color of a thing that is only supposed to grow one place in the arm growing here, on a rock the charts swear is empty. The colony is small and hidden and beautiful in the deliberate Fae'ana way — woven walkways low over the tide-flats, glamour-lamps that don't carry past the basin rim, a founding grove of crownflower coaxed up from wild seed by people who read this world's mist and salt until it agreed to let them stay.
They meet you at a landing shelf tucked under the canopy, and they are careful with you in a way that has nothing to do with suspicion and everything to do with what you're carrying. The handling rules for living Shen'varai stock are older than your ship and older than your grandmother's ship: temperature, mist, light, the devotional pace of a people who believe you do not hurry a thing that will outlive you by a thousand years. A Fae'ana grove-matron takes the caste-sealed reliquary from your hold with hands that shake just slightly, because in that seed is whether this grove becomes a second wild source or dies a rumor.
And out past the basin rim, somewhere in the grey, a hull that followed you from Ee'la is deciding what to do about all of this. Dawn-Bough is the quiet center of a fight the arm hasn't noticed yet: break Aelva's monopoly and you might free a medicine that clinics ration by the drop — or you might light the fuse on a flower-convoy war. A crew standing in this basin, cargo delivered, is standing exactly on the line between those two outcomes, and the people around them are betting their lives that it tips the right way.
