PLACE
Temper-Ledger Quay
Overview
Temper-Ledger Quay is a pressure-sealed ore quay, quench sample hall, stamp gallery, and two live temper furnaces. Steam hammers the ceiling; iron scale crunches under boots; wet stone and hot oil coat the tongue. Nothing here was arranged for visitors. The rails, booths, locks, and work lanes follow the people who earn their meals here, and a crew that blocks the wrong threshold learns this before anyone bothers to explain it.
The place is the last practical barrier between arrival and completion. The quay safety office refuses Bera's portable instruments as uncertified off-world equipment. The crew can demand a witnessed calibration, borrow an independent Deep Rise standard, or keep the suspect convoy physically berthed while Bera proves the local standard was altered. Local workers know which rule is real, which one appeared this morning, and which supervisor has suddenly found money for a clean collar. They will not volunteer that knowledge to armed strangers. They might share it with people who listen, carry a crate, or keep a frightened witness from being talked over.
At mission speed, Temper-Ledger Quay becomes a clock with walls. Bera must reach the live furnace, witness a full quench cycle, and stamp or condemn the outbound plate before the convoy clears. Holding the quay without turning an audit into a clan brawl is the actual escort job. The room rewards calm bodies in the right place, independent records, and the stubborn refusal to let procedure become disappearance. Start a firefight and the machinery, doors, or quarantine system wins. It was built to.
