Cold Hold

Overview

Cold Hold

Two hops off Khesret, one past Hardfell Core, there's a world the Concord charts don't have a name for — because Cold Hold never asked to be on them. Tens of millions of dwarves live down there under a dense, cold, iron-tasting sky, on a world of grey seas and grey stone, and not one of them has ever filed a gate registry with the rings. They didn't forget. They decided. A hold keeps its own books, the saying goes, or it isn't a hold.

So you come down toward radio chatter running wide open in the clear — market prices, shift bells, a hundred years of somebody's grandmother reading the tide tables — into a port that's frankly nicer than it has any right to be for a place that officially doesn't exist. Deep berths cut into a sea-cliff, foundry smoke braided into the fog, and everywhere the click and glint of beadwork: debt-clan beads, Guild-honor beads, hold-kin beads, every dwarf on the dock wearing their whole financial and moral history in their hair where anyone who can read it can read it.

That's the thing about Cold Hold. It's not lawless — it's the opposite. It's a place with tens of millions of people and its own iron courts and no Concord badge to appeal past, where a debt is a debt until the beads say otherwise and a promise made on the dock is enforceable by folk who've known your clan for two hundred years. Outsiders find it warm and unnerving in the same breath: real coffee, a bunk out of the cold, a straight welcome — and the quiet certainty that here, more than most places, your word is on the record whether you meant it to be or not.
