Cold Hold Sea-Cliff Berths

Overview

Cold Hold Sea-Cliff Berths

You come down through cold fog braided with foundry smoke and set your hull into a berth cut straight back into a grey sea-cliff — a slot of worked stone with mooring rings older than the Concord and a heat-curtain roaring at the mouth to keep the weather out. The port's good. Better than good. For a place that officially doesn't exist, Cold Hold keeps its docks the way a proud clan keeps its hair: everything squared, everything counted, everything on display.

Up from the berths is the rite-hall district, and that's where a homecoming actually happens. Wide low halls of black stone and warm iron light, long tables, the smell of sea-stew and hot metal, and the sound — the sound is beadwork, thousands of little clicks as dwarves greet and argue and settle accounts with their whole history hanging in their hair. Debt-clan beads. Guild-honor beads. Hold-kin beads. A dock-reeve can read a stranger's entire standing from ten feet away, and does.

It is the friendliest hard place you'll ever land. They'll feed a crew that flew their kin home through the cold and mean it — a bunk, real coffee, a straight welcome. And in the same breath a reeve will step to your ramp with a soft voice and a beadwork ledger and want to know, precisely, who you're carrying and what they owe, because on Cold Hold a debt is a debt until the beads say otherwise, and a promise made on this dock is enforceable by folk who've known the family for two hundred years.

Cold iron-tasting fog braided with foundry smoke, the roar of berth heat-curtains, sea-stew and hot metal, and everywhere the click of beadwork as dwarves greet and settle accounts
occupantSummary
Tens of millions of hold dwarves; hold-reeves and dock clerks; foundry and market crews; Halda Stone-Braid at the rite-hall; the odd kin-carrying hull
