Halda Stone-Braid keeps a dock the way other people keep a promise. She's the hold-reeve who reads the beads at the Cold Hold berths — two hundred and eleven years of knowing exactly who owes what to whom and never once needing to raise her voice about it — and she is also the reason a certain young dwarf is on your hull at all. Bryn is hers: clan-daughter, near enough, the kid Halda sent off to carry the family's debt six years ago and has been counting the shifts until she came home.

She's built like the cliff the port's cut into. Iron-grey hair in the heavy layered beadwork of a full hold-reeve — kin-beads, honor-beads, the small blackened ones that mean she's presided over debts settled and debts forgiven — and a face that gives away nothing until it decides to, at which point it gives away everything. She prepaid Bryn's passage in full, quietly, so the girl wouldn't have to arrive owing even the trip. That tells you the shape of her: she spends her own standing before she'll let her kin carry a burden.

Which is exactly why the crew should think hard before they let a dock snag land on Bryn. Because Halda will fix it — she has the honor and the coin and the two-century reputation to make a padded tally vanish with a look — but every bit of that she spends is standing she earned over a lifetime, spent to clean up a mess a decent crew could have handled on the ramp. Do right by her kid and you've got a hold-reeve who owes you a good turn and never forgets one. Leave the kid stuck and let Halda pay for it, and she'll thank you politely, settle up to the last bead, and quietly make sure the hold knows what kind of hull you fly.
