Bryn Ash-Braid

Bryn Ash-Braid is going home, and she has not stopped talking about it since she came up the ramp.

Six years she spent working off a clan debt on a Khesret orbital — berth-scrub, seal-runner, the jobs a young dwarf takes when the family owes and it's her turn to carry the beads. She's thirty-four, which for a dwarf is barely grown, and it shows: broad and sturdy already but soft in the face, forge-tan not yet gone to leather, hair worn in the plain single ash-grey braid of a debt-clan kid who hasn't earned her full standing yet. That braid is the whole point of the trip. Cold Hold has a re-braiding rite waiting for her — the ceremony where the bond-cleared beads go in and she stops being the family's debt and starts being the family's kin — and she is so wound up about it she'll narrate the entire thing to anyone who holds still.

She's good company, honestly. Generous with what little she has, quick to help stow cargo she wasn't asked to touch, the kind of kid who says thank you twice. What she doesn't know — what nobody's told her — is that a bond-factor back on Khesret ran her final tally cute, and somewhere in the fine print there's a claim that she still owes a sliver of bond-time.
