The Crownline Conflict

Solaris history books call it a border incident. Haliori beam-cathedrals call it the Crownline — the war where the Greater Beam tested whether humans would finally act in the interest of garden worlds they were too primitive to fill.

It began in the 2240s as stewardship proposals and ended as fleet actions. The Haliori Crown held thirty solar systems already and could not feed its own arithmetic — billions healthy, billions more coming. Federation rim surveys listed habitable biospheres still thinly settled by human colonies the Crown regarded as waste. Negotiation wore the polite mask first: lease language, relocation stipends, "temporary administration" by solar princes. Humans said no. Haliori councils genuinely did not understand why.

When the shooting started, Solaris admirals expected a regional flare-up. They got a lesson in crown-weave shields — eldrich barriers spun from cultivated crystal hearts that turned kinetic slugs and beam fire into embarrassing light shows. Haliori pickets lived through volleys that should have vaporized them. Federation tonnage was larger; Haliori hulls were harder. The line froze where both sides ran out of political breath, not technical capacity.

No peace treaty followed. Ashveil tried to negotiate recognition and borders; it failed. What holds is a long-standing ceasefire — guns down, grievances up — still in force in 2277 while pickets trade warning shots that bounce. The Crown still broadcasts stewardship hymns. Rim colonists still arm militia drills.
