Pass-Forge

Overview

Pass-Forge

Five hops out — Sol, Alpha Centauri, Lacera, Karth, and then one more into the cold — you come up on the far edge of where the frost republic bothers to plant a flag. Pass-Forge isn't Karth Deep. It's a big, dry, wind-scoured world called Threnn with a thin bitter atmosphere and frost on the night side, and the only thing on it worth a berth is the forge: a Karthunai outpost that pulls ore out of the local belts and beats it into the armor-alloy the whole arm pretends it can counterfeit and can't.

The Karthunai came out here because the ore's good and the cold's honest and a forge that far from the arena districts answers to nobody's holo-rights. A few thousand souls, most of them plate-smiths and belt crews and the families that keep them fed. It's an E-class berth — no polish, no customs theater, just a beacon that flickers and a dock crew that measures your hull by whether you brought what the writ says you brought. The republic runs it the republic way: elected foreman, audited books, and the iron Karthunai rule that dishonesty earns a lifetime embargo. Out here a bad name doesn't get you fined. It gets you never sold to again, by anyone, forever.

So the place runs on schedule and grudges, and it runs clean — mostly. What a smart crew learns fast is that a forge this remote is exactly where a lie likes to hide: honest material, honest smiths, an honest writ on top, and somewhere underneath, a buyer whose name isn't on any of it. The alloy that leaves Pass-Forge is supposed to become armor that saves lives. Some of it becomes armor that gets people killed, and the difference is which hands it lands in — and whether anybody hauling it stopped to ask.
