Karthunai
Overview
Karthunai — the frost republic that sells the arm's best armor.
Outsiders still describe them the way frontier bars describe anything taller than the bouncer: lion-folk in white-to-silver fur, nine feet of quiet menace. That caricature is half wrong and half useful.
Form — Adult males commonly stand nine to ten feet; females slightly smaller and equally dangerous. Both sexes carry massive musculature beneath dense white-to-silver fur built for arctic survival. Leonine heads, powerful jaws, retractable claws, and padded silent feet cross ice without the noise their size promises. Eyes: ice-blue, silver, or deep amber — unnerving even at rest. Male manes grow fuller with age, often braided with metal rings and trophy markers; veteran females keep scar-braid traditions as complex as any warlord's. Heat weakness on tropical decks is real — fatigue, temper, cooling-suit dependence.
Karth Deep is their cradle — a Hoth-class ice planet in the inner arm where the wind strips paint and the night lasts a season. Republic cities cling to glacier shelves and storm walls: sealed arcologies for voters and schools, open-sky arena districts for the culture that still matters. Government is democratic, not dynastic. Citizens elect councils, audit budgets, and argue about export law like any other republic. What outsiders mistake for "warlord politics" is usually arena standing — challenge culture moved off the throne and into sanctioned combat sport, contract duels, and the Frost Circuit that sells holo-rights across the sphere.
Technologically they punch far above their census. Karthun powered plate is the benchmark for close-quarters work in vacuum, belt mining, and boarding actions — exo-rigs with frost-hardened servos, etched faceplates, and modular joints that southern yards try to counterfeit and fail. Their engineers treat armor like the old mountain smiths treated lacquered axes: beauty is discipline, and discipline is survival. Warriors are not artists, but every recognized armorer is still oath-sworn and fight-trained. Cowardice earns contempt; dishonesty earns a lifetime embargo.
On Khesret they are a visible minority with an oversized reputation — diaspora enclaves on cold berths, contract teams on Brass Vein Mining Station, and arena stables under the transit rings. A second wave arrived after the gate migrant years: Depth refugees who remember snow citadels that never existed outside a headset, carrying muscle memory in borrowed bodies. Old republic families and new gate-born kids argue about what counts as "real" Karthun, but both buy the same armor kits.
