PLACE

Kestrel Decay Yard

Overview

Kestrel Decay Yard is where dead Federal survey tender Kestrel Twelve and its flight black box stopped being machinery and became a legal argument. The place reads in layers: blue work lamps, frost-furred trusses, slow tumbling metal, and clipped Federal recovery calls. Nothing sits politely on a cargo pallet. Every useful piece is attached to a dangerous mass, a bad orbit, a burned foundation, or somebody else's signature.

The working path is ugly and specific. Survey the structure. Kill stored energy. Establish a safe line. Mark the lawful cut zone. Then bring out the named recovery without mixing it with loose scrap. Oath Post verifies the recovery warrant and insists the recorder remain in witnessed custody. A crew that skips those steps may still carry something home, but it will be the wrong thing with a better story attached.

Small details do the heavy lifting here: witness tags tied where gloves can reach them, old scoring around access plates, dust caught in magnetic seams, and the silence after a cutter stops. Stabilize the tumbling tender, cut the recorder cradle without cooking it, and decide how much recoverable hull Ellis may lawfully claim. Vacuum, unstable structure, and impatient claimants provide enough trouble. The site does not need ghosts.
