It smells of cold iron, dust, and sleeping grain—unless a sleeve has leaked, when the first warning is cellar sweetness. Handwritten fields cover the lid because dock crews trust ink they can see. Each lot lists substrate, water salinity, light hours, and quarantine needs. Colony tenders and union ships buy the box as fire-and-blight insurance; collectors buy rarer seeds and never dirty their nails. Common fasteners make field repair possible. They also make casual opening tempting. Mix two labels, breathe mold across the rack, or plant an untested lot beside a surviving crop and one small bookkeeping shortcut can erase the berth's remaining food genetics.
