Last Berth grows blue-green medicinal moss on sterile cork wafers, each harvest tool wrapped in a red tear-away sleeve. A healthy tray smells of rainwater and copper coins; sugar or rotten apples means foreign yeast has taken hold. Keep the cork damp with boiled water, provide six hours of cool light, and cut around the crown rather than through it. Deck clinics and independent ships buy the culture because resupply dates lie. Officers call it backup medicine. Dockhands call it what is available. Washed strips cool minor burns and protect dirty abrasions until proper treatment arrives. The red packaging helps exhausted hands, but it does not make the moss sterile forever. Touch it after working bilge, reuse cloudy rinse water, or harvest black-edged growth and the dressing can turn a small wound into fever, rash, and an expensive evacuation.
