Nina Torres

Nina Torres introduces herself after she has checked where the ship intends to strap down her sensor cases.

She's a Federation acoustic engineer, thirty-four, compact and sun-brown, with dark hair shaved at one side and a white calibration pencil tucked through the rest. Her left ear carries an old industrial burn. She hears perfectly well and is tired of strangers asking. Nina maps structural vibration for frontier colonies: berth plates, water mains, pressure walls, the machinery everybody forgets until it starts knocking at three in the morning.

Her field ritual is brisk. Photograph every seal. Log every serial. Run a dead-channel test before the live sweep. She teaches without fuss and swears at vendor menus with considerable artistry. Oath Post interests her because dense air and mesa stone turn ordinary equipment noise into long-travel vibration. It also worries her because the survey annex shares that same stone with Oath Hall counseling rooms.

When the mechanical channel begins resolving human phonemes, Nina doesn't make a speech. She stops the export, writes the timestamp on her forearm, and asks who holds the privacy key. That's the whole problem right there. She wants good data. She refuses to pretend people become ambient noise because a manufacturer found a clever way to reconstruct their voices.
