Northreach Cantilever
Overview
Northreach Cantilever
The Northreach Industrial Covenant built a cantilever arcology that leans over a dead river basin like it won an argument with geology and intends to collect interest. Five hundred fifty million people work inside — not live, not quite: work is the verb the Covenant prefers. Ship subassembly bays run three shifts deep; logistics AI cores tick in cooled rooms that smell like hot plastic and old coffee; food paste lines extrude tomorrow's calories with the cheerfulness of a hospital cafeteria; dorm stacks treat sleep as a scheduling problem solved by white noise and timed lights.
Cantilever workers supply Solar Navy subcontract hulls, Concord queue hardware, and the invisible parts wealthy Earth pretends spawn from boutiques. Residency brochures say 30 for Earth. Northreach pays rent on that fiction every time a buffer senator uses the word "cradle." You feel the cantilever before you see the skyline — a low pylon groan through the deck plates, welding glare bleeding through dust filters, paste kitchens hissing at hour marks, and the particular silence of a dorm corridor between shift bells.
If Helix Basin is vertical hunger stacked to the clouds, Northreach is horizontal hunger — same class, different architect, same punch card. Helix builds components; Northreach builds things that leave. Freight cans to Luna leave warm. Navy inspectors count bodies, not souls. And when a stress sensor flashes amber on Deck 7, Covenant PR calls it routine the way captains call a hull breach "venting."
